All we can say is, it must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Yes, this feral cat managed to get his head stuck inside a mayonnaise jar. The kind people at Tabby's Place cat sanctuary rescued him and brought him to our sister hospital, the Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in Levittown, PA. Our vets sedated the cat and snipped off the plastic jar. Nice work everyone!

You heard about Minnesota's skyscraper-climbing raccoon this week, but did you know about the artwork this daredevil stunt inspired? Check it out.

St. Paul's skyscraper raccoon spawns fan art -- and merchandise
Updated: June 15, 6:19 a.m. | Posted: June 13, 2 p.m. The saga of the #mprraccoon was the summer blockbuster drama we didn't know we needed. And now the hashtag will soon become a tote bag. The daredevil brought worldwide productivity to a halt Tuesday as it scaled the UBS Plaza skyscraper in downtown St.

Pet insurance is the right choice for many pet owners, but not everyone. BluePearl's Dr. Cathy Meeks offers these pointers in her latest column.

Pet 411: Why Veterinarians Want You to Consider Pet Insurance
When bringing home a new pet, most people have a variety of things they need to acquire, from a new, soft bed to plenty of nutritious food. I'd like to take a moment to urge you to add one more item to that list: pet insurance.

Congratulations on your sons and daughters who go off to college this fall. Is the family dog going with them?

Animal house? More colleges are saying yes to dogs and cats in dorms.
Most dorm residents at Southeast Missouri State University will show up this fall with bedding, a laptop, a backpack and other typical accessories. A few dozen others will tote something furrier - and breathing: their pets.

Our veterinarians spend years learning the science of veterinary medicine. But is there more to learn outside the bounds of science? Grab a tissue, take a deep breath, and read this poignant, thought-provoking article by our Dr. Karena Joung.

The extra shift that transformed my outlook on veterinary medicine
The alarm sounded at 4:30 a.m. and I hit the snooze button for the third time with a sleepy, uncoordinated fist. Why did I agree to work this extra shift? I stumbled out of bed and then headed to work, black coffee in my veins fighting a losing battle against exhaustion.

Most dogs make us want to say "awwwww." But these dogs who received the Medal of Courage make us want to stand up and salute. Thanks to the heroes, those with two legs and those with four.

These four military dogs just received the nation's highest honor
Four veterans were honored with Medal of Courage awards on Capitol Hill on May 22. They didn't give any speeches, but not just because they were humble - the four vets are retired military working dogs. The American Humane Lois Pope K-9 Medal of Courage is the highest honor for military dogs that displayed extraordinary valor and service to their country.

This is a story about two dogs whose lives were saved with a process you may not realize is used in veterinary medicine -- dialysis. We're glad Armani and Bella came to BluePearl hospitals after coming down with a potentially deadly disease called leptospirosis. Thanks to expert treatment and some very dedicated owners, we're happy to report that these two pets are wagging their tails again!

Dialysis and expert care saved these dogs from deadly disease
Leonard Clementi had never heard of the deadly bacterial disease called leptospirosis until it infected his 5-year-old Yorkipoo, Armani, "like a sneak attack." John and Tracey Bradbury had never heard of leptospirosis either. When their 8-year-old Labrador retriever Bella was infected, a veterinarian said they might need to euthanize their beloved dog.

When her cat Rosita accidentally ingested med...

When her cat Rosita accidentally ingested medicine meant for her dog, BluePearl veterinary technician Amanda Fernandez did what 2,999,999 people had done before her: She called the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “Thankfully, prompt medical attention and the guidance of APCC’s knowledgeable staff allowed Rosi to make a full recovery with ‘nary a hitch in her giddy-up,’ Amanda says.” Amanda and Rosi learned that they were APCC’s 3 millionth case when their call was answered, and they want to say, “thank you to the entire staff at APCC for doing what you do—all day, all night; every day, every night, without fail.” If you need to reach the Animal Poison Control Center, call (888) 426-4435. And by the way, most BluePearl hospitals also are open around the clock. Our veterinarians are experts on many toxic substances that pets get into, but we sometimes call the poison control hotline also. It's a great resource.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Celebrates 3 Millionth Case
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center recently hit a milestone when they assisted their 3 million caller, a pet parent whose Sphinx cat had ingested a high amount of toxic medication. Read more about this case, and how APCC helped save this cat's life.

In honor of Cute Puppy Monday (if that’s not a holiday, we think it should be!), we offer this shot of 10 ridiculously adorable golden retriever puppies. One of them, Dakota, was a patient at our BluePearl hospital in Nashville, Tenn., when she had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Luckily one of board-certified emergency and critical care specialists was able to treat Dakota and help her get back home to her loving family. Thanks to rayoflightphoto.com for the great image!
