Did you know we have a full time staff of animal caregivers for all the fish, mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates? We met with mammal and bird caregiver, Laly to ask a few questions... Q: Where did you go to school? A: I earned my Bachelor’s degree in comparative psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and am currently working on my Master’s degree in environmental management at the University of Houston- Clear Lake. Q: What is your favorite part about your job? A: I love the pure joy and excitement an animal gets when they figure out a new behavior we have been working on. Q: What is the most important part of your job? A: I would say that the most important part of my job is facilitating the ability for the everyday person to develop a connection with an animal they may never have had the opportunity to see up close otherwise. I feel this connection is the driving factor behind so many efforts to protect and conserve our environment and the animals we share it with. Q: What is your favorite behavior you have trained? A: My first favorite behavior is a color discrimination behavior with Wednesday, one of our green wing macaws, where we use sign language to tell Wednesday what color of toys we want him retrieve. My second favorite behavior is one you will see in our show this summer. If the host of the show forgets a line, Gretchen, one of our rats will bring them a cue card on stage. Q: If you could tell Facebook one thing, what would it be? A: This planet is completely and utterly interconnected. Every effort you make to protect your favorite animal ends up protecting all the animals in that same habitat.

Did you know we have a full time staff of animal caregivers for all the fish, mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates? We met with mammal and bird caregiver Allen, to ask a few questions... Q: Where did you go to school? A: Temple University in Philadelphia. My major was Anthropology. Q: What is your favorite part about your job? A: Having the opportunity to both work directly with and educate the public about some of the incredible species that inhabit our planet. Once I start talking about animals, it's hard to get me to stop! Q: What is the most important part of your job? A: Aside from making sure our animals get the absolute best care possible, it's important to build a connection between our guests and our wildlife and environment. The whole reason we do what we do is to make sure that the general public is equipped with the skills and knowledge to help out our natural world. Q: What is your favorite behavior you have trained? A: Since I'm newer to the Aquarium family, I haven't taught a brand new behavior to any of our animals just yet, however, I do spend my time reinforcing and building up behaviors that our animals already know (and our animals know quite a lot). Q: If you could tell Facebook one thing, what would it be? A: Respect ALL species. I know that there a plenty of animals that get bad reputations or might not be considered cute and cuddly. It's important to know the roles an animal plays and to have respect for them even if they may not be one of your favorites. Always try to learn something new about an animal; you never know how your perspective of that animal might change after learning about how amazing they are! You may even end up thinking they are cute or cuddly after all!

Continuing education is important for our animal care staff at the Aquarium. Keeping up with the latest information on animal behavior and welfare is important for animals in human care. We sent three staff members to The Animal Behavior Management Alliance (ABMA) conference in San Antonio to see the latest on animal training and welfare. Q: Where did you go to school? A: The University of North Carolina Wilmington for Marine Biology Q: What is your favorite part about your job? A: Nothing makes me happier than a fish spawn. Successfully rearing larval fish to adulthood is one of the best feelings. Q: What is the most important part of your job? A: Noticing the small details. It's important to watch out for the little changes in the behavior and health of our fish so that we can ensure that all of our creatures are receiving the best possible care. Q: What is your favorite animal to care for? A: Seahorses! Syngnathids (seahorses and pipefish) require a higher degree of care than a lot of other fish, making them a little tricky, but that just makes the job all that more rewarding. Q: If you could tell Facebook one thing, what would it be? A: Now more than ever, it is so incredibly important to choose sustainable seafood and captive bred fish to help reduce the pressures on wild populations. Captively breeding ornamental fish and invertebrates is the only way to bring many species to the aquarium trade sustainably and without harming the environment.

Q: Where did you go to school? A: Sam Houston State University. I majored in Animal Science with a minor in Wildlife Ecology. Q: What is your favorite part about your job? A: Building relationships with our animals and the milestones that are achieved through that relationship. Q: What is the most important part of your job? A: Continuing to improve our methods of training and educating to inform others about our planet. Q: What is your favorite behavior you have trained? A: I enjoy training our animals to have their nails trimmed, including our two-toed Sloth, Rudy! It is a great milestone achieved though building a trusted relationship. Q: If you could tell Facebook one thing, what would it be? A: Our planet is a delicate place. The ocean and its inhabitants are the most important part of our biosphere as our planet is 71% water. And its future starts with you! Simple steps like eliminating single use plastics and recycling can make a big change!
