Thank you to the Northside residents who went...

Thank you to the Northside residents who went to city hall last week to speak about the concerns of our neighborhood and how proposed changes to regulations of boarding houses may impact our community. "A meeting to discuss the proposals at City Hall drew dozens of city residents, boarding house owners, former convicts and civil rights advocates. The meeting illustrated the divide between neighborhood residents worried about public safety and civil rights activists advocating for the poor and prisoners re-entering society. ...Others voiced fears about public safety, particularly residents of the Near Northside, where an 11-year-old boy was killed two years ago while he was walking home from school, and from southwest Houston, where a boarding-home fire last year displaced 29."

After fatal fires, Houston officials propose stronger lodging house safety rules
After residential facility fires last year claimed the lives of three people and displaced dozens of others, Houston city officials on Tuesday unveiled several proposed changes to city ordinances aimed at improving oversight of the buildings. A meeting to discuss the proposals at City Hall drew dozens of city residents, boarding house owners, former convicts and civil rights advocates.

Solid Waste Department (SWD) is currently ONLY picking up: REGULAR TRASH as scheduled regularly. HARVEY DEBRIS ~However~ to pick up the Harvey Debris, the homeowner must call 311 first. 311 will mail them an authorization form to complete and re-mail to 311, allowing SWD to enter the property to pick up the debris. Without that release, SWD WILL NOT pick up Harvey Debris. Solid Waste Department IS NOT PICKING UP: Yard Waste / Tree Waste Heavy Trash Q & A Why are some residents heavy trash being picked up and not mine? Answer from SWD: If they pass by with the Truck carrying the pickup claw, and they feel their truck has enough space available to pick up the heavy trash, they have been instructed to do so while they are in the area, their discretion. They also have an option to take it to their nearest Depository. Due to Harvey SWD has extended hours Monday – Sunday 9am to 6pm . Attached please find the Neighborhood Depositories and Recycling Centers locations/times, rules and regulations. http://www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/pdf_files/003_rules_07072016_(v13).pdf

Dexter the Labrador retriever was shot in the head more than once, and a good Samaritan brought him to our BluePearl hospital in Brandon. While it appears the bullets missed his brain, he will need oral surgery to repair jaw damage and begin his journey to recovery. Dexter is getting excellent care by BluePearl clinicians, and rescuers with Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida are working to find him a new home.

Dog, shot in head, taken to veterinary hospital (w/video)
BRANDON - Someone shot a Labrador retriever in the head, more than once. Rescuers can't say why. But they have rallied around the dog in recent days, giving him a new start and a new name: Dexter. In one way, he was a lucky dog, though clearly not lucky enough.
