Wonderful coverage of our 2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award on November 12th! Read all about our 2017 awardees, Pierre Claver Mbonimpa and Kathryn Griffin-Griñán, and the amazing work they do in their communities.

    Two making a difference
When she walked out of prison, Kathryn Griffin-Griñán only had a dirty wife-beater shirt, duct-taped high heels, half a dollar bill, a penny and a nickel to her name. But from these few possessions, she managed to build a new life, transforming from prostitute to victims' advocate.

Rothko Chapel added an event.

The Rothko Chapel honors the start of the New Year with the sound of crystal bowls resonating throughout the Chapel, led by yoga teacher and Bayou Bliss Yoga founder Dana Shamas. Begin the year with a fresh intention through the cleansing vibrations of the bowls. **This is a very popular event and seating fills up quickly the day of the event. Preferential seating is given to those who register online in advance and will be available the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 30 minutes before the program begins. There will be no late seating after 12pm. Audio of the program will be streamed outside on the plaza and meditation mats made available for those who are unable to be seated inside. About the presenter: Fourteen years of practice and intensive study with master yoga teachers inform the teachings of Dana Shamas, founder of Bayou Bliss Yoga. Through her yoga practice, she has learned to walk through the challenges of life with grace, and enjoys helping her clients to do the same. Dana began her yoga practice while studying at Bryn Mawr College before moving to New York and London, where yoga helped to keep her grounded after long days at the Goldman Sachs office. Later on, she took her practice with her to U.C. Berkeley where she earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business, and subsequently helped to start a variety of socially-conscious companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dana uses the infinitely powerful tool of human breath to help bring about awareness and positive change in her clients lives. A certified transformational breath facilitator, she leads individual, corporate and group breath sessions, and offers life coaching. She is grateful to be back home, once again serving her home city of Houston, and passing on the gifts she has gathered during her life and study. About the series: Since September 2005, on the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm, the Rothko Chapel hosts a meditation or contemplative practice focusing on a different spiritual or faith tradition featuring teachers and religious leaders from throughout the greater Houston community. The Twelve Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions series provides opportunities for visitors to learn more about a specific spiritual or faith tradition, and experience a related meditation or contemplative practice, such as prayer, chanting, etc. To learn more about the Twelve Moment series, follow this link - http://rothkochapel.org/experience/twelve-moments-series/
