The triumphant path of this legal scholar, social engineer, practitioner, and teacher began in the historic Lyons Avenue of Fifth Ward, Houston, Texas. Lewis was also born in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. A true Fifth Ward son, Lewis attended many historic Fifth Ward schools, such as Bruce Elementary, E.O. Smith Junior High and Phillis Wheatley Senior High schools and graduated with honors in the Class of 1965. DeSoto has been on the scene for over 30 years, including documenting aspects of Houston's Fifth Ward. "While most of Desoto’s later work has been donated to UH Special Collections, his journalistic work for the Houston Post, as well as a majority of hip hop and materials related to Houston’s Fifth Ward neighborhood, have been donated to the African American Library at the Gregory School."
