Aurora Picture Show's first ever public scree...

Aurora Picture Show's first ever public screening in June of 1998 was Extremely Shorts–an open call program of all sorts of independent film and video work with the only stipulation being that they were 3 minutes or less. Bill Daniel's "History of Texas City" collage film was included in that first program 20 years ago. (And soon after, Bill began bringing radical West Coast film programs to Aurora.) Extremely Shorts is still going strong as Houston's funkiest film festival, including bite size moving image madness from around the globe. Don't miss this year's Extremely Shorts fest at Aurora this coming Friday and Saturday! #Aurora20

Catch the good times rolling on the rivers
Just upstream from a wicked little roller coaster of a rapid in the South Llano River sits a deep, long, fish-filled pool that, over more than 20 years of never-regular-enough visits, has invariably shone as a highlight on a waterway that can gift anglers with an almost unbroken string of memorable moments.

For hunters, South Texas colors a feast for the senses
In the right light and aspect, dung beetles are strikingly colorful and, yes, beautiful creatures. At least the pair busy at their kind's Sisyphean task of shoving an impressive ball of their namesake up a sandy incline struck me as such.

A Saturday walk will commemorate a historic case of police brutality
Updated 6:11 pm, Friday, May 4, 2018 Cinco de Mayo is a day of celebration in the United States but in Houston, the date has bittersweet connotations. That's because it also marks one of the most shameful acts of police brutality in the city's history, prompting a riot and the emergence of a civil right movement to bring equality to the criminal justice system.

Revamped ShareLunker program a big success
Most of the million-plus Texas anglers who primarily target largemouth bass, the nation's most popular sport fish, will brag that their state is home to the most abundant, diverse and high-quality bass fisheries in the country. Early results from the 2018 ShareLunker program give those anglers and the Texas fisheries managers who oversee those fisheries ammunition to support that claim.
