Beware of falling glitter. That's the best advice I can give you if you're hanging out downtown a few hours before the Houston Pride parade kicks off on Saturday. Oh, sure, there's the usual things you need to do if you're spending time outside on a June Houston Saturday-stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and so on-but also be aware of glitter falling out of the sky.

A Buzz-Worthy Brew: Cloud Nine Reserve Coffee
"It tastes almost like beer," I overheard a man remark joyfully upon trying a free sample of Cloud Nine Reserve coffee handed out after our SoulCycle class. "So creamy." When it comes to getting buzzed either on caffeine or alcohol, I almost always turn to tea or wine, respectively.

Well, you've made it. Happy Longest Day of the Year. Congrats. Depending on your perspective, it's all uphill or downhill from here. I'm not going to tell you what to believe, because either way the days are going to start growing shorter, and there's nothing we can do about it.

It’s Soft-Shell Crab Season at Picos

It's Soft-Shell Crab Season at Picos
It's that time of year: the crabs have cast off their shells. Cast no aspersions, however, on their sans-exoskeleton status as now they can be cooked and consumed whole. There's really little else more satisfying than being able to eat a sea creature in toto, and while soft-shell crab dishes are popping up all over Houston, I will, as I do every year, head to Picos for my crustacean fix.

Truck Yard Has More Than You Can See in One Visit
Truck Yard, one of Houston's newest beer gardens, may have roots in Dallas, where its older sibling opened five years ago, but the kitsch collected for the local version near downtown recalled an all-Houston institution for my drinking companion. "It's like the Orange Show with beer," she said before swigging from her can of Fredonia Professional Texan.

Beloved Filipino Pop-Up Returns to Houston
Few things are more refreshing on a hot summer day than calamansi juice. If you're Filipino, you're likely nodding your head at this statement. If you're not, you should be. Some compare the citrus-kumquat hybrid fruit to limes, but that's oversimplifying matters.

Of the various ways restaurants raise funds for charity, the "restaurants offer prix-fixe menus for a number of weeks" one is my favorite. I enjoy the long time frame that doesn't lock me into having to be somewhere on a certain night, and I enjoy the variety of options that come with them instead of having to order a specific dish.

Uruguay knows its cattle. Intimately, in fact. From birth, every animal born in the 3.44-million-strong country (or 12 million head of cattle) is tagged with a microchip in its ear, following its every move. This is to assure quality of life and quality of meat. After all, beef is big business for the small country.
