Everyone is encouraged to wear pearls or the color blue as a tribute.     The city of Houston plans to host a celebration of former first lady Barbara Bush's life on Thursday, welcoming residents to the steps of City Hall at 6 p.m. Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the event at Wednesday's City Council meeting, where he called Bush not only the "matriarch of her family, but also the matriarch of Houston and Texas itself."

The uplifting celebration will include remarks by William Lawson, Founding Pastor, Wheeler Baptist Church, Samuel Karff, Rabbi Emeritus, Congregation Beth Israel, and Joseph Fiorenza, Archbishop, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, performances by the Houston Children's Chorus under the direction of Stephen Roddy, interfaith prayers, a reading of a poem written for the occasion and other tributes.
